What will aged care look like when the convergence of computer, television and games console occurring in our lounge rooms becomes the norm in aged care residencies?
In the year 2051, 27% of Australians will be over 65, with 2 million of us over 80 and many of us living in aged care facilities. Imagine aged care residents ‘chilling out’ in front of their laptops, having a live video chat with their grandchildren, or surfing the web for information. It will have an impact on the way aged care residents communicate, the quality of medical care, increasing mobility and entertainment options and creating connectedness.
The Media Resource Centre in partnership with Helping Hand Aged Care want to know what aged care could look like in a digital age.
While social networking sites, emailing and skyping are part of this exploration, they’re not the whole story. The Aged Care, Digital Lifestyles project will foreground the kinds of integrated digital social media programs which can personalise care and build and extend bonds of residents, families and carers operating in the same physical space. The project will test ideas through the delivery of social media programs via a workshop model involving digital storytelling and prototyping an aged care facility intranet.
