James Ensor

James Ensor is an internationally recognised sustainability and international development leader with a track record of enabling people and organisations to achieve positive socio-economic and environmental change at systems-scale. Currently Vice President of External Affairs with BHP focusing on co-creating solutions to secure a Just Energy Transition.

With 25 years global leadership experience spanning the international NGO, business, philanthropic and government sectors, James career aim is to make a leadership contribution towards solving the unprecedented ‘wicked’ environmental and socio-economic sustainability challenges of our time through building co-created solutions between communities, civil society, business and governments.

James breadth of leadership experience has been gained in roles including as International Program and Policy Director with NGO Oxfam; inaugural CEO of catalytic philanthropy BHP Foundation; management roles with Indigenous land rights organisation Central Land Council and research and advocacy roles with environment NGO's including Environment Victoria and Victorian National Parks Association. James is also founder of People & Planet Group Pty Ltd, a management consulting firm providing sustainability advice across corporate, government and NGO sectors.

With degrees in Economics and Science (specialising in Natural Resource Management) and postgraduate qualifications in Journalism, James has completed the Cambridge University Prince of Wales’s Business & Environment Programme for Industry, Australian Institute of Company Directors Program and Melbourne Business School Senior Executive Program. James is currently a Board Member of the Global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and Faculty Member of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
